The Wall Street Journal: Shun This Basic Cybersecurity Tactic and Become a Target for Hackers

December 29, 2024

I recently contributed to a Wall Street Journal article highlighting the critical role of multifactor authentication (MFA) in protecting against cyberattacks. As recent breaches at UnitedHealth Group and other major companies reveal, the absence of MFA can leave organizations vulnerable to devastating financial and reputational losses. Even the most basic MFA significantly enhances security, making it an essential measure in today’s digital landscape.

“In today’s day and age, there’s no reason not to use some form of MFA,” said Tom Hyslip, assistant professor in the department of criminology at the University of South Florida who focuses on cybercrime and cybersecurity.

“Even the minimum MFA is a thousand times more secure than just a username and password,” Hyslip said.
